Capital city of Scotland - the best city for pubs
Edinburgh has approx. 450 000 inhabitants, and is the capital city of Scotland. Its many, many historical sights have contributed to it being known as the 'Athens of the north'. The city is divided into the middle aged old town with the Edinburgh Castle overlooking the streets, and the new town, with wide streets, many parks and gardens, and houses from the 19th century. The natural center of the town is the castle, which is slightly elevated in relation to the rest of the town. Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, with many historical buildings, pubs, lane ways and nisches waiting to be discovered. Edinburgh is also a University city, a center for science and culture, as well as for many industries and educational centers in Scotland. The famous Symphony Orchestra is at home here, as is the Military Tatoo (a music festival with many bands playing the bagpipes and drums). The city is the center for the church, medicine, and the law courts within Scotland and is the ideal starting point for excursions to discover the fascinating, surrounding territory. Edinburgh wears the title of being the 'Best City for Pubs' proudly - and when the weather is bad outside, the over 700 pubs, taverns and bars pulsate with live music.
