Brighten

A swimming village with the character of a big city
Brighten attracts many tourists from England, and around the world, perhaps due to its lively atmosphere, or its unbelieveable shopping facilities, the culture, and the number of sport activities available, or due to its attractive surroundings. It is often referred to as 'London by Sea', has approx. 250'000 inhabitants, a mild climate and is approx. 80 km south of London.

Brighten is the only city in England that is a beach resort, and at the same time has the character of a big city. It also has the most well known congress center in Great Britain. This is the ideal place for a student who would like to visit the ocean, and cannot do without the facilities of a big city. During the years, Brighton has merged with Hove, originally a village on its own.

It is possible to reach London in 55 minutes, (departs hourly from Victoria Station) and in 30 minutes you can reach Gatwick Airport. The city has been known as a place to relax and tank energy since the 1800's. The old part of the city is beautiful - 'The Lanes' - with narrow lane ways and romantic nisches, and many many restaurants, antiquarian shops and exclusive boutiques. This area is busy all year round. Brightens past is still present in the architecture such as the famous Royal Pavillion, a palast built in the 18th century, in indian style by a prince.

If you are interested in shopping, then you will find the perfect shops, they are almost as good as those in London. If you prefer living culture, there are many theaters, including the Royal Theater with many shows from the West End and musicals such as the Dome Theater with shows, comedy, as well as pop and classical concerts. Much of this famous and successful entertainment comes directly from London. There are also many cinemas offering a great variety of films, the famous Brighten-Festival in May with concerts, plays in the streets, pieces from the stage, fireworks, seven museums and the sea front, a 6 km long beach with two famous victorian piers with many more entertainment possibilities such as cabarets, discos etc. The modern entertainment facilities have something for everyone!

If this is still not enough, don't forget you are only 50 minutes away from London. Brighten is very lively in winter and in summer, with a cosmopolitian, and business like atmosphere offering sport facilities and an entertainment programme that you would find in a big city. That is obviously the reason that many people that live in London, travel to Brighten for the weekend, the city known as 'London by the Sea'. A university city and a poly technical city, Brighten has more than 12'000 students, and many language students, at any time of the year.

The city also has a lot to offer sport enthusiasts. You will find perfect conditions for wind surfing, horse riding in the hilly surroundings of South Downs with its unique view of the city and the ocean, and perfect conditions for jogging in the big open parklands.

It is not surprising that Brighten with these facilities and this location, is a popular place to visit for a language stay. In summer the 6 km beach (it has a beach with small stones) attracts thousands of people, and only a few kilometers from the old piers you will find one of the biggest, and newest Yacht Clubs in Europe.
